COMMENTS:
Rose wasn’t quite up to par today, don’t think she was feeling well. Her eating was off as well, she ate very slowly and held food in her cheeks until prompted to chew. She had a long afternoon nap and was somewhat more alert in the evening. Dr. Vesper got up very late again today, around 3p, he ate, went through the mail and went back to bed. I have had trouble scheduling his next appointment with the neurosurgeon, I called again today and finally someone called me back. I explained how Dr. Vesper’s sleeping pattern has been this week, he said he would get him scheduled sooner than later. Stephanie and the girls stopped by for a swim after dinner. After everyone left, we starting our bedtime routine and all were tucked in before I left.

COMMENTS:
Rose was much more awake & alert today. She had her shower after lunch, followed by a nice night. Surprisingly, Dr. Vesper was up at 10:30 this morning and had his usual breakfast, but was back in bed by 11:30a. He was still sleeping when Rebecca arrived at 4:30 to remove his stitches. When I went to the bedroom to get him up, he was sitting on the side of the bed, but too dizzy to stand. Rebecca went to the bedroom to remove his stitches. She stayed a few minutes to visit with him and they talked shop for a bit. She said he had one stitch that was trying to pull loose, she re-dressed it and said it should stay covered through the weekend. She offered to stop back later in the week to recheck if needed. I gave him some time for the dizziness to subside before getting him up for dinner. He had a better appetite tonight, ate a full portion of spaghetti, but delayed dessert for about an hour. Dinner, PM meds and bedtime routine all normal.

NOTE:
Earlier this week I ordered a walker for Dr. Vesper, it came in today and he willingly used it, works much better than pushing A wheelchair. I also ordered a tray table for the walker, but it didn’t come in today, hopefully tomorrow..

COMMENTS:
Rose was alert and awake most of the day, except for a short afternoon nap. Dr. Vesper didn’t get up until 1 PM, he ate his cereal, but no scone or coffee. He was back in bed by 2p and slept until I woke him for dinner at 6p. After dinner they watched TV while I cleaned up the kitchen, got p.m. meds ready and prepared for bedtime routine.

NOTE:
Dr. Vesper complained about his hips hurting, he’s not always good about describing his pain, I thought it could be from staying in bed too much the past few days. He also complained his right I was hurting, he did have some redness in the white of the eye, but it had dissipated by bedtime.

COMMENTS:
Rose was awake and alert through lunch, however a very sleepy afternoon for both of them. Dr. Vesper was up and eating when I arrived. He finished the newspaper and was back in bed until a little before 4p, I checked on him frequently and he was always sleeping. NOTE: His hospital discharge instructions noted extra sleeping was normal and necessary for the healing process. Humana called earlier this week to offer frozen meals, part of his plan is (10) meals to be delivered after a hospital stay. They arrived today via FedEx, all packed in dry ice and ready for the freezer – he is well prepared if his personal chef goes on strike! I picked up the mail for him and he spent some time going through and reading magazines and the WSJ before dinner. Stephanie and Sophie stopped by for a visit after dinner. Grandma enjoyed a little piano performance by Sophie just before bedtime. Everyone had their pm med and were all tucked in before I left.

VISITORS/WORKERS:
Sandy – Yard work
Stephanie Maxwell – HI Caregiver / Training

COMMENTS:
Rose got up very alert this morning and stayed that way through breakfast and lunch, but just as we were getting ready for her shower she decided to take a nap. I did a few chores and waited for her to wake up. Dr. Vesper really slept in today, didn’t get up for breakfast until almost 3p. He might have gone to the bathroom a couple of times, but not sure, he was always sleeping when I checked on him. He pushed the wheelchair every time he got up, he said he wasn’t dizzy, I think it just made him feel more secure. A new Home Instead caregiver came for training this afternoon, her name is Stephanie Maxwell, Stephanie has been with Home Instead for 6-7 years, she is well trained in the care of Alzheimer’s clients, she had a very caring manner with Rose. Stephanie was not intimidated by the lift, she has experience with the Hoyer lift and commented how much easier the lift was, not a comment we hear often. Stephanie helped with dinner and then fed Rose. After dinner Dr. Vesper and Rose watch TV while I played the role of stand in for Rose for Stephanie’s training on the lift. I’m happy to say, I survived and Stephanie did a wonderful job getting me in and out of bed. After Stephanie left, I cleaned up the kitchen, did the dishes, folded sheets, did the morning prep for Dr. Vesper’s breakfast and then meds all around. I set the alarm and locked up after everyone was safely tucked in bed.

PM meds, including pain medication all given at bedtime.

COMMENTS:
Rose had her usual day, quiet, but more verbal at bedtime. Rose ate well, 100% completion. Dr. Vesper didn’t get up until 10:15 this morning, it was almost 11a when he finished breakfast. I told him he didn’t have time to go back to bed since Gary Skeen (neighbor) he was picking him up for lunch at 11:30. I laid out clean clothes for him and told him he had just enough time to shave & shower. I went back to see if he was ready, found him in bed. He was still in bed when Gary knocked on the door. needless to say, he didn’t take time to shower, but he did shave. I think they had a nice lunch, although Gary said that Dr. Vesper didn’t order any food, only a drink. When he left with Gary, he held on to his arm and used a walking cain. When he returned home, he used the transport chair for a walker. He still wasn’t hungry at dinner time, but agreed to one of his old favorites. PM meds and bedtime routine all normal.

NOTE:
I trained a new HI caregiver today, her name is Lucy shepherd, Lucy is new with Home Instead, but does have some experience as a caregiver for both of her parents. Lucy is very caring and eager to learn, she thought it was a lot of detail, but was not scared off and promised to come back. Naturally, the lift was her main concern, but felt it was something she could accomplish. I assured her that both Susan & I would be available to her during her learning process. Lucy has a pleasant personality and I think she will fit in very well with both the family and the caregivers.

COMMENTS:
Rose  had a pretty average day, she was comfortable, ate well and had an afternoon nap. Rose was pretty quiet all day, but more verbal at bedtime.  Dr. Vesper did a little better today, still slow, but steady.  He got up a few minutes before 10a for breakfast. He went to the bathroom in the middle of his breakfast, I asked if he was finished and he said no. However, he went back to bed after going to the bathroom.  His a.m. meds were still on the table, I took them into the bedroom, because I was afraid he would be late getting up.  It was almost 3 PM when he got up the second time.  He lounged in his pajamas the rest of the day, which is unusual for him not to get dressed. After going through his mail and reading the WSJ, he watched TV until dinner. After dinner Gary Skeen came by, he’s running for village council and needed Dr. Vesper’s signature on his petition. Gary also invited him to join him and Dave Kennedy for lunch tomorrow, Gary will pick him up. Dinner, clean up and bedtime prep all routine.  I kept a close eye on him whenever he was walking, but he needed very little assistance today.
